1 – Freshers T-shirts!The main reason I hate the T-Shirts is because they represent everything I hate. It amazes me as how readily people will surrender their individuality and become a member of the herd. As a friend once said to me a number of years ago when I asked her if she would be wearing fancy dress on a night out “everyday of your life is a catwalk” and I can’t help but wonder what Anna Wintour would think of anybody wearing a freshers T-shirt.
2 – Bar Crawls When you’re a fresher (or a just generally a young person) the done thing is obviously to get really, really, really drunk on a night out. Then be sick, incorporeally touch somebody and just make a fool of yourself, which tomorrow you can shrug off with the line “maaaate I was fucked”. If you’re going to University and your idea of a good night out is going to a small trendy club with well dressed people while listening to a good DJ playing forward thinking underground music…THINK AGAIN!! When you’re at University it’s pretty much the law that you can only go to massive super clubs that cram so many people in they can afford to sell drinks for approximately 2p or 6p for nine. The music policy is mainstream chart & urban in rooms 1/2/3/4/5 & 6 .
3 – Awkward FriendshipsWhen you’re a fresher, because you know nobody you have to force yourself to be friends with people you really can’t stand, in order to stop you sitting in your room night after night watching ITV dramas. In some cases it may mean having to sell out and do both of the above (bar crawls & T-Shirts). Don’t worry though, after the first term you should have met some real friends who are just as pretentious as you and then you won’t need to speak to any of your flatmates ever again, apart from an awkward “hey” in the corridor. In fact, it may get the stage that when you can hear them in kitchen/corridor you hide in your room until they’ve gone back into theirs. Jus sayin.
